Celebrating Qixi (七夕) Around the World

Written by Jenni Li

This week on social media feeds, you might have noticed many posts and stories about Chinese Valentine’s Day. Qixi, also known as the Chinese Valentine's day, is originated from a classic and magical Chinese love story: the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl fell in love when they were forbidden to do so because of her status as a goddess. Eventually they were banished to two ends of the Milky Way. The birds took pity on them and decided that every year they would build a bridge to reunite the lovers. This day was the 7th day of the 7th month in the lunar calendar. In a digital world today, Qixi is no longer celebrated in China only. People and brands around the world are drawn to the beautiful connotation of this special day, and celebrate love with thoughtful events and designs. Fête Chinoise selected some of our favourite Qixi special edition gifts and a museum event that celebrated and paid tribute to this festival.

Prada

Prada invited two young models to create a short romantic film. In the video, they shared unique ways to give gifts — showcasing expressions of love. On August 7th, there were florists in some Prada boutiques in Mainland China to design beautiful bouquets for customers on site!

Gucci

The interpretation GUCCI took on for Chinese’s Valentines Day was the act of reaching the stars for one’s love. So the collection they launched in Asia was focused on gold stars and hearts.

In Chinese, the word “shoes” is synonymous with the idea of “harmony.” They are considered a well wish to send to new lovers, to grow old together in harmony.

Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton introduced a limited edition collection for Chinese’s Valentine’s Day. Many interesting objects were offered and one of the most unforgettable was this Toupie bag. Although it is named "Toupie", with the special design of a tassel on the bottom, it also reminds people of a traditional handcrafted Zongzi (traditional Chinese rice pudding) sachet. The limited edition red glossy Vernis leather also adds a classic Chinese look and feel to this playful bag.

Dior

The Lady Dior bag is a long time classic. This red floral Mini “Lady Dior” Lambskin Bag is a special version of its classic silhouette, and has the tonal look and detailed layering reminiscent of red lacquer masterpieces, yet the sculptural feeling of carved jade. Not only that it seemed to match the occasion of Qixi, it would also be a great choice for brides in China! It is a tradition for brides to prepare a new bag that's entirely red for their big day. Would you consider choosing this special edition Lady Dior for your wedding day?

Capital Museum in China

There was also an event at the Capital Museum in Beijing where many couples celebrated their Qixi together. Capital Museum is an art museum in Beijing, that houses a large collection of ancient artifacts such as porcelain, bronze, calligraphy, painting, jade, and sculpture from imperial China. Special extended hours were held to make it a more enjoyable and relaxing experience for the visitors who worked in the daytime. There, the museum guide told stories of the ancient objects curated by the museum that are related to the traditions of Qixi. The museum also reserved an area for couples to make sand paintings, where people could get design inspiration from the a museum collection named “White Jade Lovebirds Handle Round Box“ that represent love.

There was an array of jewellery pieces on display for the special event as well. The pieces come in series of silver and gold tone. The “Lovebirds“ collection incorporated a lovely duo of Mandarin Ducks as the core design element to represent everlasting love and faithful couples. Well planned and thoughtfully carried out, the event is filled with highlights of culture and delight, and is truly a perfect marriage of ancient Chinese tradition and modern lifestyle.
