Timeless Gifting for Qixi

Written & Curated by Jennifer J. Lau

Qixi Festival is a celebration of love in Chinese mythology. Based on the myth between the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl, the star-crossed lovers were separated and banished to the ends of the earth because one was a mortal while the other immortal. The magpies took pity on these lovers and ever since the legend began, they have formed a bridge each year on the 7th day of the 7th month to make way for the lovers’ reunions. This is also represented by the Vega and Altair stars in the Milky Way.

Today, the festival is not only celebrated in Chinese-speaking regions but also in Korea, Japan, and North America because of the Asian diaspora. While traditionally, females may participate in some needlework or crafts, the holiday has been transformed into ritual of gifting.

Below we provide some inspiration as to the kinds of tasteful objects you might consider getting your other half for Chinese Valentine’s Day. Even though they may not be part of an exclusive Qixi campaign, they are timeless and certainly represent the beauty of the occasion.
