The long-anticipated Canadian debut of Din Tai Fung has arrived. With the unveiling of its new brand identity, DTF™, the Taiwan-based restaurant group officially opened its first location in Canada at 1132 Alberni Street in Vancouver. Known for the art of Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings meticulously hand-folded 18 times to achieve the perfect golden ratio), DTF™ introduces Vancouver diners to a menu rooted in tradition and precision. Signature offerings include the classic Kurobuta Pork Xiao Long Bao, Spicy Wontons, and hand-pulled noodles, alongside exclusive items like the Chocolate & Mochi Xiao Long Bao.
Designed by the Rockwell Group, the space reflects Taiwanese heritage through custom lanterns, an open dumpling kitchen, and a serene, garden-inspired entryway. As part of its opening celebration, DTF™ unveiled two original works by Yu Chung Ling, son of the famed calligrapher Yu Youren. One piece now hangs in the restaurant, while the other will be gifted to the city, a gesture that honours the brand’s legacy and its connection to community through art and meaning. The restaurant seats over 300 guests.
During the opening event, guests were welcomed with custom-engraved chopsticks, drinks in hand, and an air of anticipation. A highlight of the evening was an address from Co-CEO Albert Yang, who reflected on the brand’s roots in family, heritage, and a commitment to excellence across more than 165 locations worldwide.
On the table, favourites emerged quickly: the Pork Chop Fried Rice, an array of flavourful vegetable dishes, and the refreshing Pear Lychee Martini. Their dessert Xiao Long Bao, served with sea salt cream (a special North American twist), surprised and delighted. It was clear that even with global acclaim, DTF is still evolving thoughtfully with each new location.
With its first Canadian restaurant now open, DTF™ offers Vancouver a taste of its signature craftsmanship and heritage. Diners elsewhere in Canada may also look forward to one day experiencing the authentic flavour of its beloved Xiao Long Bao, as the brand finds its place in the city’s culinary scene.
The Toronto Public Library (TPL) Foundation’s Biblio Bash returned to the Toronto Reference Library yesterday. This annual black-tie fundraiser is known for its elegant evening at the iconic library, where celebrated authors joined guests for dinner throughout the atrium. Funds raised from the event support TPL’s vital programs.
Last year’s event raised funds for the Foundation’s Newcomer Community Initiative, and this year, Biblio Bash surpassed its fundraising target, bringing in an impressive $1,070,100 to support youth programs and initiatives focused on social health and mental wellness for teens across Toronto.
