“Reshaping Collections: Where History Meets Art” showcases the unique artistic visions of six diverse Chinese Canadian artists from across the country. Running from September 25, 2024, to September 28, 2025, at the Chinese Canadian Museum in Vancouver, this exhibition invites visitors to explore the reinterpretation of historical and cultural objects through the lens of contemporary art.
Based in Vancouver, Montreal, and Mississauga, the featured artists—Morris Lum, Karen Tam, Howie Tsui, Chih-Chien Wang, Janet Wang, and Stella Zheng—were commissioned by the museum to engage with the Wallace B. Chung and Madeline H. Chung Collection at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Their works delve into the complexities of Canadian identity by creatively reimagining select items from this renowned collection.
Utilizing the latest portable 3D scanning technology, the artists spent months researching and replicating various historical objects, drawing inspiration from over 25,000 rare items housed in UBC Rare Books and Special Collections.
The exhibition spans a wide array of artistic expressions, including photography, art installations, illustrations, and Penjing rock sculptures. Visitors can also enjoy animations, films, and child-friendly wall texts, accompanied by interactive illustrated activities designed exclusively for this exhibition, making it a perfect destination for learning and exploration.
The exhibition runs until September 2025.
