Conquering Hate with Art and Love: on FORGIVENESS

In 2008 my mother Isabel Sun Chao and I began a decade-long journey digging into our family’s past, which we recounted in our family memoir Remembering Shanghai. My maternal grandfather Sun Bosheng was born in China in 1894, a year whose cosmological confluences portended conflict, instability and disaster. Two months before his birth, a great fire in Shanghai destroyed over one thousand buildings, and the First Sino-Japanese War broke out shortly after. By all accounts he was born with silver chopsticks; yet war, famine and political upheaval dogged him throughout his life.

Surpassing most performance careers — singer, songwriter, actor and producer, Eason Chan (陳奕迅) is now into his third decade of music-making since he began his career in 1995. Not many pop stars stay relevant for such a long and continuous stretch of time in the especially fast-paced Asian entertainment landscape, yet Eason has defied the odds. Winning multiple awards across Asia, and selling out for concert tours worldwide, he has been one of the top producing artists in Asia since the early 2000s.

Visual artist Brendan Lee Satish Tang is widely known for his sculptural ceramic work. Tang’s work explores issues of identity and the hybridization of our material and non-material culture while simultaneously expressing a love of both futuristic technologies and ancient traditions. He discovered a passion for art and all of the doors it can open when he was a small child. Growing up in small-town Canada, his family were the only “people of colour” in town.
