There is a reason why he has a nickname E神 or 歌神: God of Songs, admired by many like an immortal on his grand stage. Surpassing most performance careers — singer, songwriter, actor and producer, Eason Chan (陳奕迅) is now into his third decade of music-making since he began his career in 1995. Not many pop stars stay relevant for such a long and continuous stretch of time in the especially fast-paced Asian entertainment landscape, yet Eason has defied the odds. Winning multiple awards across Asia, and selling out for concert tours worldwide, he has been one of the top producing artists in Asia since the early 2000s.

He plays multiple instruments in addition to his vocal talent, including piano and guitar, and has composed his own music which has a unique blend that crosses genres of Cantopop ballads, Mandopop, blues, jazz, R&B, rock, and hip hop. Having originally studied architecture at Kingston University, he changed paths to become a singer after winning a competition in Hong Kong. He would later be bestowed an honorary Doctorate of Arts for his contribution to the Cantonese music industry by his university.

Still a current favourite in his home city and around the world, Eason continues to produce meaningful music today under his own record company, EAS. In 2020, he dedicated time to sing for the global fundraiser to fight the coronavirus led by Lady Gaga and produced his own virtual charity concert, Live is so much better with Music, in support of the Hong Kong Live Performance and Production Industry Association. The concert is on YouTube with 850,000 views and is trending towards 1 million views in a short three months. Throughout the years, he has also been an ambassador for Orbis International, an organization dedicated to fighting avoidable blindness.

The Tempo of Time.

Eason is unique, because he is one of the few singer-songwriters capable of blending various styles and cultures together. He aptly captures the spirit of the Hong Kong people who grew up supporting him. The rhythm of the everyday, the pounding anthem of a city that never sleeps, the melodies that go up and down with the ebbs and flows of life, the fleeting moments that never get to be unpacked because one must keep going, the regrets of yesterday and hope for tomorrow, and the yearning for time in a generation... his music has been a significant soundtrack for many lives in his home city, in China, and also for diasporas around the world. Anyone who takes a moment to listen will relate to the stories of time in his music. And as the years pass, the layers of meaning deepen with our own life experiences.

As a special feature to this 6th edition of our magazine, we dedicate this unique chapter to an international superstar, Dr. Eason Chan and his repertoire of music focussing on the concept of Time. In the lyrics of many of his songs, Eason helps us contemplate, reflect on, negotiate, appreciate, and demand more of time. Let us look back on his most iconic songs.

陳奕迅是華語流行音樂極具代表性的歌手及演員，《時代雜誌》形容為帶領粤語音樂潮流及影響粤語樂壇的風雲人物，繼許冠傑、張學友之後第三個獲得「歌神」稱號的香港歌手。2010年，入選全球華人音樂殿堂—中國華語金曲獎「30年經典評選」，成為90年代出道歌手唯一代表。他曾三次獲得「金曲獎」最佳國語男歌手獎(金曲獎)，三次歌王並列為紀錄保持者。

1995正式入行，出道25年，他帶領著亞洲華文年輕新一代的音樂潮流，至今已發行超過三百多首音樂作品、40張專輯，有許多耳熟能詳的歌曲作品。不論在香港、中國內地、台灣甚至東南亞地區都獲獎無數。在2005年，《U87》更被《時代雜誌》評為2005年亞洲五張最值得購買的專輯之一。近年在亞洲亦獲得不少觸目的獎項，

認定了他歌唱實力非凡和樂壇地位。除了活躍於歌唱事業外，他還往戲劇方面發展，演出了多達50部電影作品。於2014年，獲得母校英國金斯頓大學所頒發榮譽文學博士學位，以表揚他對音樂文化上的貢獻。

從1999年到至今，他在世界各地舉行超過300場演唱會，獲得大眾和媒體高度讚賞。在2010年《DUO》世界巡迴演唱會，他是首位站上英國倫敦The O2場館的亞洲歌手，並且寫下開賣20分鐘內立即售罄的驚人紀錄。此外，陳奕迅非常關心社會，2018年「L.O.V.E. is L.I.V.E.」慈善音樂會邀請多個慈善機構到現場參與；2020年4月推出與台灣歌手蔡依林合唱的英文抗疫歌曲《Fight as One》；同月與Lady Gaga多名世界級知名明星一同參加「同一個世界:團結在家-公益演唱會」為抗擊疫情籌款；2020年7月更舉行「Live is so much better with Music Charity Concert」，為疫情下沒有收入的演藝界人士籌款及提供工作機會，跨平台總觀看人數至今超過一百萬。

「初聞不知曲中意，再聞已是曲中人」，陳奕迅的音樂作品之所以能打動無數人，除了他游刃有餘的唱功，細膩深情的聲線、曲風多元的音樂，還多得一班成為他的堅強後盾的填詞人。林夕為他寫盡「時光」。黃偉文為他寫盡「感情」，講述了一個個關於你我他的故事—每個普通人渴望表達自我、不甘平庸、得到認可的時刻。周耀輝為他描繪了世界的渴望—希望找回安靜平和卻充滿希望的生活。
