This autumn, Canadian audiences will have the opportunity to experience a deeply moving chapter of contemporary Hong Kong cinema with special screenings of Ciao UFO 《再見UFO》 across October and November.

Recognised with five major honours at the Hong Kong Film Awards, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Film Score, Ciao UFO is an evocative exploration of youth, collective memory, and the evolving spirit of Hong Kong across the decades. The narrative opens with a mysterious 1985 sighting over the iconic Wah Fu public housing estate, a moment of wonder that sets three childhood friends on a journey through the changing landscapes of their city and lives.

For the diaspora community, Ciao UFO offers a profound reflection on the concept of home. Through its intimate portrayal of public housing memories, neighbourhood bonds, and time slipping past, the film serves as a poetic bridge to the streets, places, and childhood moments left behind, reminding us how shared history shapes who we are today.

Following a completely sold-out Toronto debut, a second local screening has been added to meet high demand from film lovers eager to share in this cinematic experience.

Synopsis

Based on a famous Hong Kong’s urban legend, Ciao UFO tells the coming-of-age tale of four childhood friends, living in Wah-Fu Estate in the golden 80s. After witnessing a mysterious extra-terrestrial event, their life was changed drastically, drifting away from each other. Years later the friends, now in their late twenties, each struggling with life, must once again face the past event, as well as to seek the bond between them.
