Following a successful theatrical run in Hong Kong and a celebrated North American premiere at the 2nd Pride Asian Film Festival, We're Nothing At All arrives in Canadian theatres on June 19.
Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Herman Yau, the film stars Anson Kong, ANSONBEAN, and Patrick Tam. It weaves a crime thriller, drama, and LGBTQ+ themes into a compelling, emotionally charged story. The film opens with a shocking bus explosion, and as the subsequent police investigation unfolds, it gradually peels back the layers behind the tragedy, revealing the deep repression, discrimination, family trauma, and social indifference experienced by a young gay couple.
While the film delivers the high-stakes tension expected of a thriller, its emotional core lies in its exploration of those living on the margins of society. Through its characters’ lived experiences, the story examines the complexities of navigating personal identity within broader social expectations, while asking difficult questions about acceptance, belonging, and humanity.

Known for his versatile career, Herman Yau has directed massive commercial blockbusters including Shock Wave, The White Storm 3, Customs Frontline, and Crisis Negotiators. He is equally celebrated for his willingness to tackle challenging social issues. In We're Nothing At All, he bridges these two strengths, combining the high-stakes accessibility of a crime thriller with an empathetic examination of contemporary social realities. The film has resonated strongly with audiences in Hong Kong, grossing more than HK$12 million.
The film's North American premiere, presented as the opening film of the 2nd Pride Asian Film Festival, played to a full house and received an enthusiastic audience response with a special post-screening Q&A with director Herman Yau. Its Canadian release during Pride Month offers a timely opportunity to spotlight a distinctly Hong Kong perspective on LGBTQ+ experiences, while also speaking to universal themes of love, community, resilience, and perseverance.
Synopsis
On Valentine’s Day, a double-decker bus explodes in a fiery blast, killing many and leaving charred remains, with evidence pointing to a deliberate act by two passengers, Fai and Ike, a gay couple from troubled backgrounds living on society’s margins. As retired forensic expert Lung Sir investigates, he uncovers their tragic story of abuse, homophobia, and despair, culminating in their decision to end their lives in a suicidal protest against an unjust world, leaving behind a haunting message: “On a beautiful day, we end our unbeautiful lives.”
