Breaking box office records within just 60 days and surpassing the milestone held for nearly 18 years by Cape No. 7《海角七號》, the Taiwanese hit Sunshine Women’s Choir《陽光女子合唱團》has become the first film in Taiwan’s history to exceed NT$700 million at the box office. The film is directed by Gavin Lin 林孝全, who reunites with screenwriter Hermes Lu 呂安弦 following the success of their 2018 moving hit More Than Blue《比悲傷更悲傷的故事》.
Inspired by the Korean film Harmony《美麗的聲音》(2010), the story brings the rarely explored themes of women’s prison life and choral music into a Taiwanese setting. To ensure authenticity, the creative team conducted three years of field research, including visits to prisons and extensive interviews. Drawing from real-life experiences, the film transforms these stories into a deeply moving narrative about friendship and parent-child bonds, filled with moments that touch the hearts of all audiences, particularly parents.
Synopsis
As the birthday song plays, a baby girl is born inside a women's prison, welcomed by four inmates, each burdened by a painful past. When a rebellious newcomer arrives, clashes give way to friendship. After the baby is diagnosed with an eye disease, the inmates form a prison choir to gift the baby girl a final memory. Drawing from real-life stories, director Gavin Lin's heartfelt drama blends humour, music, and redemption.
