Vivienne Tam is a fashion designer that intentionally bridges China and the West in her work, exploring beauty and wonder in our diverse shared cultures. Now she's bridging her own fashion voice with the recently trending world of metaverse and NFTs. Her new collection on the runway at New York Fashion Week is a fun and colourful bash, incorporating instances of untamed collisions of apes to mahjong tiles, pixels and flashy hex tones on fabric.

Born in Guangzhou, China, Tam studied at Hong Kong Polytechnic University before relocating to the United States with her own collection. She opened many boutiques in Asia (Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, Singapore and Philippines) and is a successful designer-entrepreneur in the fashion industry. Her retail spaces are in the most iconic districts for shopping and fashion in key cities, such as Landmark and Times Square in Hong Kong and Wangfujing in Shanghai.

It is the first time Tam has returned to New York from Hong Kong since the pandemic began in 2020. She participated in Fashion Week on Sept 14th, and showcased her new inspiration from NFTs that have been the rage (and debate) of many tech talks and all industries that metaverses and blockchains have touched including art and design, luxury fashion, and music. Therefore, Tam brought the hype, chaos and disruptive energy of the NFT PFP circuit onto the runway and into the fashion industry in her own way. The theme for Vivienne Tam's Spring Summer 2023 Fashion Show – "Metaverse, Past, Present and Future".

For her SS2023 collection, Tam pulled many familiar iconic visuals from well-known blue chip NFT collections, all of which are easily recognizable even to those who are not closely following tech news. She also ties in some of her hallmark heritage with some mahjong tiles and playful colours which appear often in her repertoire as a designer with a bold voice. This collection's spirit echoes the world of metaverses, which has an open landscape for all genders and generations.
