Coming to Canadian cinemas this Friday, The Way We Talk is the latest film from acclaimed director Adam Wong 黃修平 (The Way We Dance and She Remembers, He Forgets), known for his genre-defying storytelling. With a sensitive and objective lens, Wong leads audiences into the world of the Deaf community, offering a narrative that is both inclusive and deeply human.
Blending powerful performances with an emotionally layered script, The Way We Talk follows the intersecting journeys of three young people navigating life between the worlds of sound and silence. At its heart, the film explores Deaf culture, identity, and the many forms of communication that connect and sometimes divide us.
The film has already made waves in Asia, with leading actress Chung Suet Ying 鍾雪瑩 winning Best Actress at the 61st Golden Horse Awards and seven nominations at the 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards.
In addition to that, Neo Yau dedicated over a year to learning sign language in preparation for his role, earning widespread praise for his natural and heartfelt performance. His portrayal garnered him a Best Actor nomination at the 61st Golden Horse Awards. Meanwhile, amateur deaf actor Marco Ng brought authenticity and depth to his character by drawing from his own lived experience. His compelling debut performance earned him a nomination for Best New Performer at the Hong Kong Film Awards.
As the film makes its North American premiere, Canadian audiences will have the chance to experience the film on the big screen. Director Adam Wong will also make special appearances in select cities including Toronto, Vancouver, and more, offering post-screening talks and insights into the film’s five-year creative journey.
Synopsis
A soul-searching story about three friends who have different conditions of deafness: Wolf embraces sign language with confidence while tackling realistic obstacles in his everyday life; Alan is Wolf's cheerful best friend and an advocate of diverse modes of communication between the deaf and the hearing communities; Sophie struggles with oral language and continuously strives to be seen as "normal". The trio embarks on their self-discovering journeys with moments of pain and realisation. Sincere and empathetic, Adam Wong's latest drama feature sensitively questions what social norms and identity mean for us.
