Making waves Montreal 2025

Since its first edition, Making Waves Montreal has become a meaningful platform for cultural exchange, inviting emerging filmmakers and artists from Hong Kong to connect with local audiences in Quebec. At Fête Chinoise, we’re excited to see how the third edition of this vibrant showcase continues to spark dialogue and deepen understanding through cinema.

For one weekend only, from September 18 to 20, the festival returns to Cinéma Cineplex Forum et VIP with six new films from Hong Kong, each reflecting a unique facet of the city’s contemporary cinematic voice. Audiences will also have the opportunity to hear directly from visiting filmmakers and talent through post-screening Q&As, offering insight into the creative processes and cultural contexts behind these stories.

The Last Dance

The Last Dance

Opening the festival on Thursday, September 18 is The Last Dance: Extended Version《破•地獄》(加長版), a box office sensation directed by Anselm Chan Mou Yin (陳茂賢). Comedy legend Michael Hui (許冠文) and star Dayo Wong (黃子華) lead a story that balances humour, tradition, and grief through funeral practices. Actress Michelle Wai (衛詩雅) ,who won the Best Actress Award at the 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards for her performance in the film, will attend the screening and Q&A to share more on the film’s emotional layers and cultural resonance.

On Friday, September 19, award-winning director Philip Yung (翁子光) presents Papa 《爸爸》, a haunting, true-life drama about family, loss, and reconciliation, starring Sean Lau (劉青雲) and rising actor Dylan So (蘇文濤), who will be present for an in-person introduction and Q&A. Later that evening, Fight for Tomorrow《拼命三郎》—a powerful Muay Thai drama set in a post-pandemic world starring Patrick Tam (譚耀文)—will screen with director Chan Tai-lee (陳大利) in attendance.

Last Song for You and Fight for Tomorrow

Saturday’s lineup continues with Last Song For You 《久別重逢》, a tender love story that bridges past and present through music. Directed by Jill Leung (梁禮彥) and starring Ekin Cheng (鄭伊健), Ian Chan (陳卓賢), Natalie Hsu (許恩怡), and Cecilia Choi (蔡思韵), the film has earned seven nominations at the Hong Kong Film Awards. Following it is the latest thriller Behind the Shadows《私家偵探》, starring Louis Koo (古天樂), which explores secrets, deception, and shifting moral grounds. The festival closes with My First of May《無名指》, a moving family drama starring Aaron Kwok (郭富城), Gigi Leung (梁詠琪), and Natalie Hsu (許恩怡), making its North American debut in Montreal.

Behind the Shadows and My First of May

It’s deeply affirming to see how platforms like Making Waves continue to foster cultural understanding and artistic exchange. By bringing the voices of contemporary Hong Kong filmmakers to Montreal, the festival creates a space where heritage and modern storytelling intersect.
