Acclaimed Malaysian contemporary calligraphy artist Jameson Yap has unveiled a commissioned series of artworks for CloutHaus Residences, the luxury residential component of TA Global Berhad’s latest mixed-use development in Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC). Presented at an exclusive exhibition held at the CloutHaus Sales Gallery on May 14, the showcase marked the venue’s first major cultural activation and reflected the development’s support for local creative talent, and ambitions to position itself as a destination shaped by art, culture, and curated experiences.
The collaboration brings together two familiar names to the Fête Chinoise community, Jameson Yap (Design Annual 2023) and TA Global Berhad Chief Executive Officer Joo Kim Tiah (Edition 11). It is always exciting to see members of the wider Fête Chinoise family intersect through projects that champion contemporary Asian creativity and cultural storytelling.

Known for his signature “River Stroke” compositions, Jameson has built an international reputation for reinterpreting traditional Chinese calligraphy through abstraction, movement, and emotion. His commissioned collection for CloutHaus Residences features four bespoke works inspired by the Chinese characters 格拉豪斯, the Chinese name of the residence, with each artwork reflecting themes of refinement, connection, grandeur, and permanence. Currently displayed at the CloutHaus Sales Gallery, the commissioned pieces will be permanently relocated to CloutHaus Residences upon the development’s completion.

It isn’t often that you hear a calligrapher cite Pablo Picasso as a major influence, but that’s exactly what Jameson Yap shared when we sat down to talk about his inspiration, process and journey. It turns out that Picasso was very much a fan of the ancient Chinese art, even going so far as to proclaim: “Had I been born Chinese, I would have been a calligrapher, not a painter.”

On a video call from his Vancouver office, Joo Kim Tiah sits with the city’s skyline behind him, a skyline he’s about to transform with what may be his most defining project yet.
The real estate developer’s vision: a $2.8-billion development that would rise from two downtown blocks, an architectural statement that will become Vancouver’s most ambitious mixed-use complex to date.
“We always thought the centre of the city could support a tall tower,” says the CEO of Holborn Group, referring to the anchor structure of a three-tower complex that will reshape the urban landscape with elegant towers inspired by the ancient glass sponge reefs that filter British Columbia’s coastal waters. “Now the timing is right.”
